Day 1 of the course will cover the design theory for removable partial dentures, mouth preparation procedures, survey and design, impression technique and jaw relation records, creating tooth contours, work authorization for the dental laboratory, coordination of treatment for patients requiring fixed and removable prostheses, attachments and partial overdentures and treatment of the partially edentulous patient having teeth with a poor prognosis. Techniques and treatment planning discussions will include complete dentures, implant-supported dentures and occlusion principles for restorative dentistry. Some discussion will be given to treatment failures and their prevention. Day 2 will include information, techniques and design which are needed for successful partial/complete denture fabrication in conjunction with sound occlusion for the entire mouth. Hands-on will include designs for partial/complete dentures as well as techniques for implant supported complete and partial dentures.
Dr. Robert Schneider is an Associate Professor at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and is the Director of the Division of Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. He earned is DDS from the University of Southern California and practiced general dentistry in Arizona for 5 years before earning his MS and certificate in prosthodontics from the University of Iowa in 1983. Dr. Schneider is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, Fellow in the American College of Prosthodontists, past president and past executive director of the American Prosthodontic Society and has more than 40 years experience as a dental technician. He is a Fellow in the International Team for Implantology, the Academy of Osseointegration and the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. He lectures for the Kirdwood Community College Dental Technology program in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and has been on the Kirkwood Dental Technology Advisory Committee for more than 20 years. He has been a Trustee of the National Board for Certification in dental laboratory technology and been involved with NADL activities for many years. Dr. Schneider’s research includes dental materials, biomechanics of dental implant loading stress and materials for bone grafting, particularly for aveolar ridge augmentation. He lectures nationally and internationally on many subjects addressing the clinical and laboratory phases of fixed, removable and implant prosthodontics and has published extensively in the prosthodontic literature.
At the completion of this course, the participant will:
1. Understand the latest techniques and materials about removable partial and complete dentures and restorative occlusion.
2. Understand removable partial denture design principles and be able to evaluate various design concepts for clinical acceptability for the given patient situation.
3. Understand the typical survey/design criteria to insure excellent final restorations.
4. Understand the indications for use of a specific design of an implant-supported partial or complete denture.
5. Be able to accurately communicate with the dental laboratory.
6. Become knowledgeable about the causes of denture problems and restorative failures.

8 hours of removable denture or occlusion dentistry lecture credit for those who attend the 3/22/19 lecture only; 16 hours of removable denture or occlusion dentistry participation credit for those who attend 3/22/19 lecture and 3/23/19 hands-on. (36 hours for those who complete an in-office protocol assignment and report).
