Dr. Koerner has a Master’s Degree in Education. He is the author of many articles on various aspects of oral surgery for the general dentist and has authored or co-authored the books: Clinical Procedures for Third Molar Surgery, 2nd ed. (PennWell), Color Atlas of Minor Oral Surgery, 2nd ed. (Mosby), and his most recent one, Manual of Minor Oral Surgery for the General Dentist, (Blackwell). Dr. Koerner has been featured in several video tapes for the profession, including three made with Dr. Gordon Christensen, on exodontia, third molar surgery and medical emergencies. He is past president of the Utah Dental Association and Utah Academy of General Dentistry. He is the former Head of Oral Surgery at the Scottsdale Center for Dentistry and is currently Director of Oral Surgery at Intermountain Dental Associates in Utah.
He has organized and conducted many humanitarian trips to China (patient treatment and teaching other dentists) since 2006. At the 2010 National AGD Meeting, he received the Thaddeus V. Weclew Award for his contributions to General Dentistry and continuing education. In 2013 he received the Utah Dental Association’s Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Koerner has presented hundreds of both didactic and participation oral surgery courses at international, national, state and regional meetings for many dental associations and AGD groups. He is not an oral surgeon, but learned oral surgery in a U.S. Army General Practice Residency. For the last 15 years he has limited his Salt Lake City, Utah practice to minor dentoalveolar surgery, including ridge augmentation and implant procedures.
Many extractions look easy, but can soon become difficult, time consuming, and lead to complications. This course reviews the best techniques and instruments to perform “surgical” extractions easily and quickly while conserving bone. Multiple extractions and ridge preparation for dentures (including frenectomy and alveoplasty) are covered, along with flaps and the most common suturing techniques. In addition, Dr. Koerner reviews some un-complicated socket grafting methods, bleeding management, techniques to avoid sinus problems, anxiety control for surgery patients, and other topics as time permits.
Attendees will have a clear understanding of how to:
More easily do “surgical” or difficult extractions that frequently occur in general practice.
Be more proficient at ridge preparation for immediate dentures.
Select appropriate socket grafting cases and have the knowledge to do them successfully.
Prevent and/or manage bleeding problems that can occur during oral surgery.
Control patient anxiety related to oral surgery.
Perform oral surgery according to current standards of care.
7 hours of lecture credit may be used towards FAGD, MAGD or relicensure for dentists and hygienists.
