Dental care requires an understanding of the current, evidence-based role of drugs in the overall management of patients, particularly with regard to medically compromised patients. This seminar is designed to update attendees with current, important issues in the use of the common drug therapies, with an emphasis on current scientific evidence that may disrupt traditional approaches to local anesthesia, acute postoperative pain control and antibiotic therapy. Many dentists are not familiar with or competent in the use of intravenous administration of drugs during emergency events. Many dentists also believe that non-intravenous administration of emergency drugs is an inferior method, resulting in significant delays and/or ineffective responses. This participation program is designed to familiarize dentists with various non-intravenous types of drug administration (IM, IO, intranasal) that can be effective in emergency situations. Evidence for these routes of administration will be presented and participants will gain hands-on experience with them using the SimMan manikin, overseen by an expert in this technology.
This program provides an updated understanding of evidence-based drug therapies in dental care, focusing on their role in managing medically compromised patients. Key topics include current scientific evidence impacting traditional approaches to local anesthesia, postoperative pain control, and antibiotic therapy. The program addresses the use of intravenous drug administration during emergencies and dispels misconceptions about non-intravenous methods (IM, IO, intranasal). Participants gain hands-on experience with these alternatives using SimMan manikins under expert guidance, enhancing their competence in emergency drug administration.
These hands-on programs were created for AGD Fellows aspiring to be AGD Masters, but we’ve discovered that they may benefit all dentists, from new graduates to seasoned practitioners.
