Treatment of the Modern Dentist: How to Understand & Manage Medical Conditions in 2026 & Introduction to IV Sedation

For the last 26 years, Dr. Shufflebarger has practiced exclusively in the sedation/anesthesia and surgical aspects of dentistry, at his own practice in Beavercreek, Ohio as well as numerous offices in Dayton, Ohio and surrounding communities. He maintains privileges at 3 local hospitals.

After beginning his education at Purdue University studying chemistry, he continued on to The Ohio State University College of Dentistry where he was honored to earn the Horace Wells student award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Dental Anesthesiology. Thereafter he completed a residency program with Miami Valley Hospital. Dr. Shufflebarger has achieved the status of Master of the College of Sedation with the ADSA.

Dr. Shufflebarger has an eagerness to learn, study and share his research, knowledge, and techniques which is evident in his experience with teaching at Miami Valley Hospital, University of California-San Francisco, Jacksonville University, Wright State University, Premier Health and similar universities, hospitals and organizations. Currently, Dr. Shufflebarger is the Managing Director of Miami Valley Hospital’s Department of Medical Education’s long standing comprehensive Moderate Sedation training series, where he creates and teaches didactic, skills and simulation content for sedation training. He has instructor status and trains medical professionals in BLS, ACLS, and PALS.

Course Description:

This course provides a thorough medical evaluation tailored for general dentists treating today’s increasingly complex dental patient. Participants will review key medical conditions, learn evidence-based strategies for patient management, and develop confidence in emergency preparedness through both didactic instruction and hands-on training.

Course Objectives:

Following this presentation, dentists will:

• Metabolic Disease (Diabetes, Obesity, etc.) Associated Medications and Dental Considerations Part 1
• Metabolic Disease Part 2
•  Understanding Mental Health Medications
•  Cardiovascular Disease (#1 killer of American Men and Women) Part 1
•  Cardiovascular Physiology, Pathology and Management Part 2
• Patient Management Practicum

Day 2:

• Practical Monitoring Primer and Emergency Preparedness
• Essential Medical Equipment and Emergency Drug Administration
• Emergency Recognition and Algorithms Part 1
• Emergency Recognition and Algorithms Part 2
• Hands on Skills (Oxygen devices, drawing drugs from vials, IM Injections, etc.)
• Hands on Skills (Primary assessments, monitoring and team skills)

Who Should Attend?

These hands-on programs were created for AGD Fellows aspiring to be AGD Masters, but we’ve discovered that they may benefit all dentists, from new graduates to seasoned practitioners.

CE Credit:

16 hours of participation credit for those who attend the 2 days of lecture and hands-on. 34 total hours of participation credit to those who attend the 2 days of lecture and hands-on, complete the assigned protocol in their office, and return to document the protocol assignment.

The total tuition for Premasters for this course, which includes the reporting session is $1075. MAGD’s receive a $100.00 discount and pay $975. Non-AGD member is $1175. The Illinois Academy of General Dentistry and the Wisconsin Academy of General Dentistry are pleased to present this program leading to Mastership certification in the Academy. To complete the Mastership Program, candidates must enroll for 600 hours of continuing education, 400 of which must be of participatory nature.
