As a vital branch of the Illinois AGD, we are dedicated to providing educational value, camaraderie, and meaningful relationships with our speakers, attendees, and sponsoring partners through our curated Chicago AGD Seminar Series. Join us in this dynamic community dedicated to excellence in dental education and advancement. We provide 4 seminars each season (September 2026- May 2027) given by the best regional and national lecturers that we are excited to collaborate with. The content is driven by seminar attendees and geared towards the interests of general dentists. We have an incredible and diverse lineup of topics of great value that our memberships will provide to engage and expand the dental knowledge of our attendees.

The Seminar Series is held at Oak Brook, a Chicago suburban community at a centrally located and beautiful venue – Gibsons Steakhouse – offering great food, service, and ease of interactions with attendees, speakers, and sponsors.

Here at CAGD, we are truly honored to have the steadfast support of our sponsor partners who share with us a common goal of empowering and uplifting dentists from their everyday dentistry to their future dental aspirations. Their ongoing commitment is the cornerstone of our success. It is through their generosity and collaboration that we are able to deliver the exceptional standard of education that has enriched our journey through the years.

The Science of Dental Prescribing and Pharmacotherapeutics – From Pharmacokinetics to Clinical Decision-Making– Season Pass #3

Speaker: Dr. Steve Shufflebarger

When: March 5, 2027 (8 am – 5pm) – 8 Hours Lecture

Location: Gibson’s Bar & Steakhouse in Oak Brook

Course Objectives:

This course provides a comprehensive review of essential pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles that form the scientific foundation for rational analgesic and anti-inflammatory prescribing in dentistry. In-depth coverage includes opioid and non-opioid analgesics, antibiotics, and both steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The course also examines current scientific evidence surrounding recently FDA-approved analgesics with atypical mechanisms of action.

In addition, select non–first-line drug classes commonly prescribed by physicians for pain management will be reviewed to enhance dental practitioners’ clinical decision-making and interdisciplinary understanding.

Special attention is given to substance misuse and abuse, and how these challenges influence patient care and interprofessional collaboration. Local anesthetics are emphasized as both a cornerstone of pain control and a definitive means of addressing the underlying etiology of dental pain.

Additional topics include dependence, tolerance, and addiction, as well as evolving educational, legal, and regulatory prescribing frameworks. Participants will gain practical, evidence-based strategies to improve prescribing practices, enhance patient safety, and optimize clinical outcomes.

This course content fulfills DEA MATE training requirements (8 hours) and satisfies most state opioid prescriber education requirements.
