Day 1 of this course will examine the latest evidence regarding the effectiveness of materials and techniques for diagnosis, prevention and remineralization of dental caries. The effective implementation of various evidence-based products and techniques will be reviewed. The characteristics of these materials, indications for use, handling properties, clinical techniques and contraindications will be discussed in detail. Indications, contraindications and clinical techniques for placement of direct esthetic restorations will be discussed as well as the various ADA codes that may be used to bill for caries diagnostic tests and remineralization strategies.
Day 2 of the course will provide the opportunity to use caries diagnostic tests and various glass ionomer products and composite resin materials to place a direct esthetic restoration.
Supplies: For the hands-on session on June 11, 2016 please bring magnification eyewear and standard high and low speed with friction grip and low speed with latch attachment handpieces.
Dr. Poonam Jain is a Professor and the Director of Community Dentistry at the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine (SIU SDM) in Alton, IL. She has taught at SIU SDM since 1997. She obtained her BDS degree from the University of Delhi and her Master’s in Science and a Certificate in Operative Dentistry from the University of Iowa. Dr. Jain obtained her MPH degree from the School of Public Health, St. Louis University. She taught Operative Dentistry in the Restorative Dentistry Department at SIU SDM from 1997-2006 and took over as Director of Community Dentistry in the fall of 2006. Her teaching responsibilities at the SIU SDM include didactic and clinical courses in Cariology, Community and Preventive Dentistry, Special Needs patient Care and Geriatric Dentistry. She directs all community outreach efforts at SIU SDM.
At the completion of this seminar, participants will be knowledgeable in:
1. The evidence supporting the latest materials and techniques for diagnosing, preventing and remineralizing dental carious lesions
2. The ability to compare and contrast the various commercial products available for caries diagnosis and remineralization
3. The use of appropriate ADA codes for billing when using caries diagnostic tests and remineralization strategies
4. Develop a program for their practices that effectively utilizes various glass-ionomer products indicated for pulp capping, bases and permanent restorations including core build-ups
5. Utilization of glass ionomers and composite resins for direct esthetic restorations
(towards AGD Fellowship or Mastership)
8 hours of Operative or Esthetic lecture credit for those who attend the 6/10/16 lecture only; 16 hours of Operative or Esthetic participation credit for those who attend the 6/10/16 lecture and 6/11/16 hands-on. (36 hours for those who complete an office protocol assignment and report).
