The Central Illinois Component of the IL AGD hosted an excellent CE course, “Cariology and Esthetic Restorations,” with Dr. Poonam Jain at Southern Illinois University College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Poonam Jain is a Professor and the Director of Community Dentistry at the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine (SIU SDM) in Alton, IL. Day 1 of the course examined the latest evidence regarding the effectiveness of materials and techniques for diagnosis, prevention and remineralization of dental caries. The characteristics and implementation of these materials, indications for use, handling properties, clinical techniques and contraindications were discussed in detail. Dr. Jain also reviewed the various ADA codes that may be used to bill for caries diagnostic tests and remineralization strategies. Direct esthetic restorations utilizing glass ionomer materials as bases and liners and restorative materials to reduce recurrent caries were discussed. Friday night, many of the doctors attended dinner at Tony’s Restaurant and enjoyed an evening of good food and socializing. Day 2 of the course provided the opportunity to use caries and salivary diagnostic tests and various glass ionomer products and composite resin materials to place direct esthetic restorations at the SIU CDM Simulation Laboratory. Many thanks go to the CIAGD Board volunteer members who hosted this course-Drs. Sue Bishop, Curtis Mitchem, Kirk Hess, Brenden Moon, Wallace Strow and Kevin Nelson. Save the dates, November 18-19, 2016 for CIAGD’s next program with Dr. Terry Tanaka on Occlusion, TMD and Prosthodontics at SIU CDM.
