Over the last 30 years, many exciting advancements have been made in the field of endodontics. The basic biology has not changed, but the way we diagnose, approach and deal with endodontic disease has changed. In this course we will look at the major improvements in technology and methodology that impact the care that we are able to offer our patients.

James A. Smith, Jr., D.M.D. was born in Bessemer, Alabama and attended the University of Alabama where he was a walk-on player for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant and received a B.S, Chemistry Major, in 1976. He was accepted into the University of Alabama School of Dentistry and graduated with a D.M.D. in 1980. He then completed a residency in Endodontics at the same institution and Birmingham VA Hospital in 1982.
Dr. Smith has been in private practice for 42 years (2 years Gulfport, Mississippi then 40 years in Birmingham, Alabama) and founded Advanced Endodontics in Birmingham, where he is in full time clinical practice. He has presented to dental groups and schools across the USA and Canada and at the American Association of Endodontists national meeting. Dr. Smith is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of Alabama Birmingham School of Dentistry and a Scientific Board Member at Sonendo®, an endodontic technology company headquartered in Laguna Hills, California.
Jim and his wife, Lisa, reside in Vestavia Hills, Alabama and have 3 grown children and 6 grandchildren.
Each participant will:
1. Learn about the technologies available today that can raise the level of endodontic care for our patients.
2. Gain knowledge in the area of diagnosis and local anesthesia.
3. Become more aware of the relationship between conservative endodontics, proper restoration and tooth longevity.
4. Be able to make better choices about when to attempt to save a tooth with root canal treatment, when to refer to an endodontist and when to extract.
