Advances in the field of Orofacial Pain: Beyond the Teeth – Season Pass #1

The ILAGD General Assembly meeting will take place at the conclusion of the September 17 CAGD meeting.

Course Description:

There have been recent advances in the recognition of orofacial pain as a specialty in dental medicine that have implications for the general dentist. In this presentation,wewillexploretheevidence-basedapproach toscreening,diagnosis and management of several orofacial pain conditions including trigeminal neuralgia, headache, and temporomandibular disorder. The focus will be on patient presentations that are likely to present in the general dentistry setting. We will discuss issues related to inter-professional collaboration in the care of complex patient presentations and will provide specific indications for referral. Case presentations will show how inter-professional management can facilitate improvement in patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the evidence-based diagnosis and typical management of trigeminal neuralgia, headache, and temporomandibular disorder.
  2. Identify key differential diagnosis issues in non -odontogenic orofacial pain specific to patients that may present to the general dentist.
  3. Describe the interdisciplinary roles of members of the healthcare team in the management of patients with orofacial pain, with focus on general dentists and physical therapists.
  4. Identify barriers to interprofessional collaboration between dentistry and physical therapy in the management of patients with TMD and potential strategies to promote improved interprofessional collaboration.

When: November 5, 2021 (8am – 3pm) – 7 Hours Lecture

Course Description:

The objective of the lecture is to:

  • Reiterate basic principles within endodontic theory, diagnosis,
    chemo-mechanical debridement and obturation.
  • Provide information regarding the advancements of the specialty
    with small field of view cone beam CT.
  • Update audience on surgical breakthroughs within the specialty
    leading to the near doubling of clinical success (apicoectomy vs.
    endodontic microsurgery).
  • Provide information on “cracked teeth” and the advancements of
    materials allowing retention of the natural dentition.
  • Discuss contemporary practices with irrigation, lasers, and
    biomaterials.

The Status of Dental Implants: From Placement to Maintenance to
Salvation; What Have We Learned in 57 Years – Season Pass #3

When: March 4, 2022 (8 am – 3pm) – 7 Hours Lecture
Location: Maggiano’s Restaurant @ Oak Brook, IL

Course Description:

Statistics: An estimated 30-40% of dental Implants are in some stage of failure. Why? What can be done about it?

Types: Peri-mucositis, peri-implantitis, implant soft tissue problems, implant fixture issues

Causes: Implant quality, size, position, placement, restoration.

Placement: Revisiting Biological Principles: Computer-guided Implant Placement, in-office 3D printing of surgical guides

Restoration: What works, what does not. Where are most of our problems.

Maintenance: How do we maintain implants? How often? What are the signs of problems? Review progression of implant disease.

Salvation: What is peri-implantitis? How to accurately diagnose a problem? At what point do we treat it? Can the implants be saved? Ho do we treat problems and maintain long-term success?

Treatment: Maintenance therapy vs. surgical therapy
